An Assyrian who was sold into slavery and bought by the lanista Quintus Batiatus. During his time in the ludus of Batiatus, Ashur was treated cruelly by the other gladiators and he would seek out ways to get back at them. Because of his cunning and devious nature, Ashur proved himself to be a better henchman to Batiatus than a gladiator, although he did long to be part of the brotherhood. He once tried to befriend the gaul Crixus, by uniting with him against Quintus' champion, Gannicus, but Crixus wanted Gannicus for himself, so he struck Ashur in the leg and pushed him into a fire, crippling Ashur and scarring him for life. With the help of the Medicus, Ashur recovered from his injury and tried to rejoin his brothers on the training ground, but Batiatus chose to remove him permanently from the ludus and keep him in the villa as a trusted agent. As a reward for his services, Ashur was allowed to choose any one of Batiatus' slave girls to be his mate. Ashur chose Naevia, the most trusted slave of Batiatus' wife, Lucretia. However, this was Ashur's plot to avenge himself against Crixus, because Ashur discovered that Crixus was already having a secret affair with Naevia. When Crixus learned of Ashur's relationship with Naevia, he went berserk and attacked Ashur in front of Batiatus' guests. It was then that Ashur revealed Naevia and Crixus' affair to their masters. Naevia was beaten by Lurcetia and sold on, while Crixus was whipped in front of the other gladiators and slaves. Ashur enjoyed watching his nemesis being punished, but he decided to get rid of him permanently by advising Batiatus to drug Crixus' food prior to his ceremonial fight with Spartacus. Spartacus knew of this treachery, however, and he stayed his hand in combat long enough for the drug to wear off. The two men then united in revolt against the house of Batiatus, and many Romans were slaughtered. Ashur managed to escape the rioting by hiding under some Roman corpses, and he fled the House of Batiatus. Show less «
