Carl Otis Winslow was a character portrayed by Reginald VelJohnson in the 1984 movie Ghostbusters, and on the American sitcom Family Matters from 1989-1998.He takes his job as the Big Kahuna and King of the Castle, very seriously. However, he is easy to admit defeat to Harriette when he's involved in typical marital disputes with her.Carl's happily married to Harriette and has three kids with her, Edward, Laura and Judith Winslow. He's very protective of them, especially his daughters and will go through great lengths to make sure they're happy. Despite that, he has an easy going relationship with Laura, Judy and his adopted son, 3J. However, he often butts heads with his eldest son, Eddie, because he has a blatant disregard for authority and he's very strict when it comes to him taking responsibility for his actions. More than once, this has led to serious conflict with him (and one time, caused him to move out in season 4, episode 9: The Oddest Couple). He has a sister-in-law, named Rachel Crawford and his nephew is Richie. He also has mother named, Estelle, who was very hip and trendy, despite her advanced age. She was also known as Mother Winslow by everyone in the family, except Steve who refers her as Estelle my Belle . His father is Sam Winslow, who was a Tuskeegee pilot and they were married for a long time. It was revealed in Season 4, Episode 18: Higher Anxiety, that his father's death was the true reason why he refused to accept that his mother has found love in the first place. His step-father is Fletcher Thomas whom he didn't approve of from the beginning, but tried to get along with him after Harriette set him straight for hurting his mother. Carl is the second oldest of five brothers and he was close to both older bother Darryl and Walter and even his youngest, Calvin. However, it was revealed in Season 8, Episode 23: The Brother Who Came to Dinner, that he and his younger brother, Frank (who is a clown in a travelling carnival) were estranged due to the fact that he was very upset with him for skipping out of their father's funeral and had refused to forgive him for that. He eventually does so and decides to rebuild a long forgotten relationship with him.Carl is an officer for the Chicago Police Department. He takes his job seriously, and it is often suggested that he is very good at what he does, despite the fact that one or more of his bosses, Lt. Lieu Murtaugh (from seasons 2-4 who had a crush on Rachel. She hated him for his borderline sexual harassment of her), Captain Savage(from Season 6) and Captain Geiss (the comissioner's son in season 9, Episode 5: Whose Afraid of a Black Book), are very incompetent. However, unlike Murtaugh, Geiss actually went to him for help in defusing the gang riots in the park. Fitting into his character, he has an avid love for donuts and other junk food. This plays into the fact that he is overweight, and in several stories throughout the series, Carl's physical health plays a role.Early on, he is a police sergeant; he is eventually promoted to lieutenant, and eventually captain after his boss, Comissioner Geiss, realized that his son wasn't ready to be a captain and wisely stepped down to stay as a Lieutenant to get an additional 10 more years.Carl is constantly annoyed by his pesky neighbor, Steve Urkel, who has a very high level of respect for Carl, and affectionately calls him Big Guy . Although Urkel is relentlessly annoying, and has cost the Winslow family tons of time and money, resulting from his own clumsy demeanor. He's also mature to take responsibility for himself, and offered to get other jobs to pay for his clumsiness. However, Carl is often there to back Steve up, and help him out in times of distress. Over the progression of the show's run, he develops a fondness for Urkel that surprises even himself.Throughout the series, whenever Carl decides to firmly stick to a decision, he sternly states his catchphrase, I have spoken! Some other catchphrases he has said to Steve Urkel every time he gets annoyed with him is Go home Steve! Urkel tries to protest, but he kept saying Go Home and kept saying, GO HOME! GO HOME! GO HOME! then Steve replies I'm not going to take this I'm going home. One time in Season 6, Episode 2: To Be or Not To Be part 2, Stefan used the same catchphrase on Carl when he was Carl Urkel after he constantly kept distracting him from repairing the Transformation Chamber. He also replies to Steve's accidents after he says, At least no one got hurt , Carl says Not yet then chases Steve to hurt him. Also when Steve does anything to annoy Carl, he says to Steve, Steve come here then Steve says, Uh-oh and Carl chases Steve around to hurt him. Show less «
