Father Clifford is an English-born priest sent as curate to the small Irish town of Ballykissangel. Despite some initial conflict with the parish priest and with some of the locals, Peter becomes well-liked and is sought out by many for advice. He comes to doubt his vocation as he becomes too close to the local publican Assumpta Fitzgerald.
