JANICE RAND pursued one of the most varied of all careers in Star Fleet. Whenever anyone asked her why, she always came back to the influence of one man: James T. Kirk. Simply put, she sought to appeal to him romantically at first. But he made abundantly, though subtly, clear to her that his real mistress was his ship and he would never risk a romantic entanglement that would, in his view, be prejudicial to good order and discipline. So she spent a few years seeking any kind of career that would make her somehow worthy of him. Eventually she settled on a career path that would win him the respect due a fellow Star Fleet officer who made the most of her talents. That, in the end, she found a much more valuable prize.,She first came aboard the Enterprise from yeoman's school. A yeoman, aboard any naval vessel, is a clerk. And a captain's personal yeoman serves him as personal secretary, steward(ess), and military aide. She developed a monumental crush on Captain Kirk, whom she regarded as the unobtainable but most desirable man she'd ever met. One time he took notice of her--or rather, his vicious double did ( The Enemy Within )--and the result was monumentally embarrassing to them both. After that, Captain Kirk almost went out of his way to avoid her--and once he protested (out of her hearing) that he would like to punch the lights out of the headquarters genius who assigned me a female yeoman. Finally Captain Kirk called her into his office--the office he rarely, if ever, used. He informed her that, although her services had been exemplary, she was wasted in such an assignment. In a style that only a James T. Kirk could have used, he urged her to get off the ship and go back to school to make something of herself other than a captain's personal yeoman. Which, he also dryly informed her, he had never been comfortable with, and felt he could do without. (The Bureau of Ships later records that Captain Kirk had his chief engineer, who doubled as a shipfitter, refit that office into a VIP passenger stateroom. Thereafter he conducted all interviews of a sensitive nature in his quarters, or the main briefing room on Deck Three, or in the respective offices that his exec/science officer, medical officer, and chief engineer maintained. His habit of avoiding a separate office influenced the decision of the Bureau of Ships to design future starships with Ready Rooms, just off the bridge, for captains to use.)Janice Rand took the hint. It was rejection, to be sure, but such letdowns didn't come any gentler, or more inspiring.First she went to navigation school, and briefly came back to the Enterprise as a navigator. Then she went to transporter school and thus was back aboard the refitted Enterprise as Transporter Chief for the Voyager Six mission. Even that did not satisfy her, so she was in communications school when a thoroughly battered Enterprise came back to the Earth Spacedock after the Genesis mission and the battle with Khan Noonien Singh, who had commandeered a lesser-model starship (USS Reliant) and gone after Kirk with vengeance on his mind.Eventually she finished communications school and, after a stint at Star Fleet Headquarters in San Francisco, was assigned to USS Excelsior, the first of a newer model of starship, as senior communicator under Captain Hikaru Sulu. She was serving in that capacity when, returning from an assignment in the Beta Quadrant, Excelsior felt the shock wave from the explosion of Praxis, moon of Kronos (QonoS), home world of the Klingon Empire. She would later be on hand for the Battle of Khitomer, against Chang, a renegade Klingon in league with two more renegade officers: a Star Fleet admiral and the Romulan ambassador. She finished her career as Commandant of Star Fleet's Communications School. To her dying day she pointed with special pride to the Khitomer incident, and to being on-hand when the Klingons, once the Federation's bitterest enemies, became their most valuable allies.(In the altered timeline of the Berserker Wars, then-Lieutenant Rand would be the first to see a starship captain--James T. Kirk, in command of USS Farragut--having a Klingon first officer. What she, in the First History timeline, would have made of Captains Jean-Luc Picard and Benjamin Sisko each having a Klingon serve him as master-at-arms, one can readily imagine.) Show less «
