Sam is derived from the word Samhain (actually pronounced Souw-in), which is the Gaelic celebration that coincides with Halloween. It is the day that separates the light half of the year from the dark half, and contains elements of honoring the dead. Sam in the film Trick r Treat is the spirit of the holiday, in the form of a little boy in what appears to be footie pajamas and a burlap sack. He enforces the rules of Halloween-- no blowing out jack-o-lanterns, being committed to giving out candy, stuff like that. Sammy is not above enforcing these traditions with an iron fist, aka, lethal lollipop. Moral of the story: Follow the rules or Sammy is gonna have something to say about it.
