Simon Broome is the brother of Sylvia Broome, and grew up in Matobo. When their parents and sister were killed when their Range Rover hit a landmine placed by Zuwanie's men. Shortly after their deaths, Simon and Sylvia became followers of Ajene Xola who sought to overthrow Zuwanie. When Sylvia left Matobo Simon continued working with Xola, as well as childhood friend Phillipe Broullet who was now a respected photographer. Simon and Xola were led to believe that Xola's chief rival Kuman Kuman wanted to meet to form an alliance to overthrow Xola.
