Her father, Philippe Weis, is one of the richest and most powerful men in the alternative America protrayed in the film. Taken hostage by the fleeing Will Salas she becomes a fugitive from the Timekeepers and for the first time learns of life in the poor 'Time Zones', where the people live day to day with literally hours of their lives left.
