Tabitha Tibby Tomko-Rollins is a colourful character amongst the four sisters. She is a sarcastic, piercing-ridden video enthusiast and to say that she is full of character is understating things: she is cold and pessimistic, yet loyal and supportive; brave and knows exactly who she is, yet afraid of being hurt and unsure of what she wants. Lena describes her as a person who marches to her own tune and is very sure of herself. Tibby is a mass of contradiction, but she grows and learns along the way.In the first movie adaptation of the novel, she was portrayed as a teenaged rebel and looks the part with piercings and blue and blonde highlights in her hair, ready to take on the world by hating everyone and everything in it - excluding the sisters, of course. In a row, Carmen spat, ...you're the one who walks around saying screw the world because that's easier than having to feel something! She was quick to judge, and held on to her judgements of others. Such was her character- it is her way or the highway. Close-minded, but what's it to you? She was very closed off to everyone around her except her sisters and to some extent, her family and other friends. Once a person was deemed a 'loser' in her eyes, they would remain one no matter what others may say. Her firm standing was thrown off by an equally certain girl - Bailey, a 12 year-old who is much younger than her, but seemed far more confident than the average 12 year-old. Bailey budged into the reluctant Tibby's life, sensing Tibby's reluctance to get to know anyone, she pestered Tibby with her appearance, but kept her at an arm's length. She remained a faithful Personal Assistant to her while Tibby was filming her 'Suckumentary'. Eventually, with Bailey's persistence of being a part of her life, Tibby changes her mind about strangers in general, and learns to accept different people when she saw Bailey was not what she had expected. She even grew to love Bailey when she finds out she suffers from leukaemia, and gets hurt after Bailey's death which she would have otherwise been indifferent to. Bailey's death helped Tibby grow in so many ways, albeit in a bitter-sweet manner. She becomes milder and it is as if Bailey's demise uprooted Tibby from her teenaged rebel character. No - it was not a character; it was more a facade she has put on to belie her fear of getting to know a stranger. It was a fear she had of getting to know someone and of getting hurt should they step out of her life. Bailey's death also opens Tibby up to befriend Brian McBrian, a video gamer Bailey and her had filmed for her movie. In the sequel movie, which takes place three years after the first, Tibby has grown in considerate amounts and ways. She has grown to become a sophisticated young lady, in much ways milder than the teenaged Tibby but occasionally her sarcastic side does slip out and she does not deprive her friends of her witty comments. She has taken off her piercings, bore a head of natural-coloured hair and dressed more maturely - not in girly, pastel-coloured prom dresses; just more maturely. She has been dating Brian McBrian for almost a year, a stark contrast to her past self who would never dare to date. Their relationship became more intense and Tibby has a pregnancy scare. We see a glint of the old her, morbidly afraid of loving someone. She avoids Brian until he looks her up to talk about her pregnancy scare. She 'kinda, sorta' breaks up with Brian as she pushed Brian away when he offered his unconditional support, ...I could get a job, but Tibby effectively left things hanging between them, citing that she needs to lead her own life too. When she learns she was not pregnant, she failed to patch things up with Brian and informed him of her not being pregnant through a mere e-mail.In between all this, (before learning she was not pregnant) she visited Carmen and tried to tell her about her pregnancy scare, but being unaware that Carmen had been livid about not being contacted by any of the sisters and always being out of the loop, she mistakenly took Carmen's caustic remarks to offence and her being busy as ignoring her. They had a tiff and Tibby left, both furious at each other - Tibby at Carmen for not offering biased support at the time of need, Carmen at Tibby for barging in her life after no contact for months. Later, Carmen receives a phone call from her pregnant mother in Bethesda who was about to go into labour, but was unable to leave for home because of a play she was involved in. Desperate, she calls Tibby - the only sister in Bethesda - for help, who promptly dropped her work at her parent's anniversary party to leave for the hospital immediately. Tibby helps deliver Carmen's baby brother, an act which brings Carmen and her back together.Tibby learns that Brian dated Effie during their cool-off period, when he brought her along to Tibby's parents' anniversary party. Later, although not shown explicitly in the movie, (it was only shown that she apologised to Brian) they are back together when Lena comforts a sobbing Effie who says, Brian's going back to Tibby. There are notable changes between the movie character and the original character from the book. They are both portrayed differently, although slightly, in character and imagery. In the book, Tibby's character change was more drastic than what was shown in the movie. It was also obviously, more well-developed. The feel of the character though, is still mostly the same, the slight differences merely being nitpicks and mild annoyances. The character remains (in five adjectives) the rare, intelligent, realistic, sarcastic and witty girl; simply full of character. Of course, then there is the fifth book which is set in the future and brings about change in the universe of the Sisterhood and especially to the character Tibby, however a lot of fans found that to be a stagnant continuation and ending of the series which defeats a lot of the character development (for the other three sisters as well) that we see in the book. Some of the character development did spill into the movie, but by the nature of it, not much can be shown in the span of four hours over two movies. The simple fact of the fifth novel being vastly out of universe (or character) has caused it to be overlooked by some fans; half of them treating it as a cool read, but not as the ultimatum. The other half ignoring it entirely, perhaps disappointed by the author's oversight. However, what rest of the fans who still enjoyed the fifth book, enjoyed it purely for its well-crafted writing -- the shock value, would you say -- and tear-jerking plotline despite the baffling stagnancy and even regression of the characters, Tibby included.
