Sam Gold (Jesse Eisenberg), a 20-year-old moderate Orthodox Jew, lives in the hope of being close to religion and the life of godly Jews. Jesse still suffers from the religious community that imposes his control, especially as he is at risk of being ostracized from his religious community when he becomes directed towards the drug world because of his older brother with him
