Dr. Mark Greene was the chief resident of the E.R. department. Many fans and entertainment writers considered him to be the heart of the show.He was married to a lawyer in the first season but the marriage soon fell apart. He had a long-standing crush on his co-worker, Susan Lewis, but was unable to express his feelings to her. He finally confessed his love as she was boarding a train to Arizona but it was too late. After sowing some wild oats as a single man, he became close to and married Dr Elizabeth Corday. They had a baby girl, Ella, together.In season one, he mishandled a childbirth case which resulted in the death of the pregnant woman.In season three, he was viciously attacked and beaten in the men's room, which left him traumatized. The identity of his attacker was never discovered.When he was young, he was continually at odds with his father who was a retired military man and viewed Mark as weak. The relationship was further strained when Mark's mother died as she had always been the buffer between them. However, when his father's lung cancer neared end-stage , Mark hospiced his father in his apartment until the end.His marriage became strained when Susan Lewis returns to Chicago and Elizabeth grew jealous of the closeness and history between them. The marriage troubles worsened when Dr Greene's daughter from his first marriage, Rachel, came to live with them. Rachel, a troubled teen had some ecstacy and two-year-old Ella swallowed some.He was diagnosed with a brain tumor that he was told was inoperable, but went to New York City for a radical new surgery. Though it takes a while to return to his old self, things seemed to be going well until a year later, when the tumor returns, and this time it truly is inoperable.Dr. Greene resigned from the E.R. and decided to forego further treatments and spend his last days peacefully in Hawaii, where he dies on the beach at 6:04 in the morning. His final thoughts were recorded in a letter he wrote to his staff which was faxed to the hospital by Elizabeth after his death. Show less «
